LYNDON ELLIS, GENERAL MANAGER AT ANANTARA VACATION CLUB MAI KHAO PHUKET

Phuket’s postcard-perfect image makes it a clear favourite among holiday-goers looking for pristine beaches, an adventure island or a luxurious seaside hideaway. For Anantara Vacation Club Mai Khao Phuket’s General Manager, Lyndon Ellis, there is certainly no shortage of activities in one of Thailand’s finest beach destinations. In this interview, he recommends a few ways to embrace new (and old) experiences on the festive holiday island of Phuket.

Q: Can you recommend some activities for a family vacation at the resort?

The “Dive-In Movie Night” program is highly recommended for the whole family. With kid-friendly movies that are well selected, free popcorn for everyone and happy hour drinks for adults, guests of all ages will be delighted. This enjoyable combination of swimming and movies happens every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 6.45 pm – 8.30 pm.

We also recommend the Dance Exercise class to those who want a fun, non-strenuous physical activity while on vacation. The routines are adjusted to all levels of exercise, from basic moves to more upbeat dancing. The activity is also great for the family; they can groove to hit songs and learn from the engaging instructor’s lessons. The activity is complimentary and is held every Tuesday at 5.00 pm.

The resort also offers basic Thai language lessons. Through these simple lessons, guests can learn useful Thai words and phrases from a native Thai speaker during their stay, which can help them interact in a more friendly way with the locals. The complimentary lessons, held every Thursday at 3.00 pm, are easy and fun.

Last but not least, our Rock Climbing Wall is a great activity for all the kids. At 5 meters tall, it is not too daunting, however big enough to give the little ones a buzz!

Q: What special activities in Phuket would you recommend to Club Points Owners and guests?

There’s plenty to do in Phuket. In Old Phuket Town, guests can take a leisurely stroll and see the Sino-Portuguese-inspired mansions and shops that are quite well-preserved. Visiting quaint shops, enjoying the local cuisine at the island’s many restaurants, and simply marveling at the local sights are also great fun. We have complimentary “Old Phuket Town Walking Maps” available for our Club Points Owners at reception. Island hopping should definitely be on most families’ must-do list – our friendly staff would be glad to make arrangements for them whether they want to go on half-day or full-day excursions. Guests can also go on safaris, canoe trips, ATV tours, nature tours, and so much more.

Q: Do you have any tips for spending a summer holiday or summer entertaining activities in Phuket?

Going on a shopping trip while on a summer holiday in Phuket is to be expected. Bargain hunters should take note that when negotiating, it’s best to keep calm. Sometimes, smiling when negotiating helps you get the best deals. As I’ve previously mentioned, we have a useful “Old Phuket Town Walking Map” that will guide them through their shopping and other activities.

Q: What are your personal 5 must-do activities in Phuket?

Walk around Old Phuket Town. Beautiful shop houses, impressive mansions, and lots of small cafes and eateries await those who want to really see the local scene. It is best to go on Sunday when the Walking Street Market is on.

Take the John Gray Sea Canoe – Hong by Starlight tour. This is a fabulous experience and my number one recommendation.

For families with kids, a visit to the Splash Jungle Waterpark is the perfect way to cool off in the summer. The kids will love floating around on its many thrilling water slides. Of course, parents and the bigger kids will be entertained, too.

Watch the Phuket Fantasea show, a mixture of traditional Thai myths, trapeze artists, colourful costumes, lots of comedy and fantasy all presented in an elaborate and entertaining package.

Lastly, I recommend visiting Wat Chalong. It’s one of the best ways to take a brief respite from the exhilarating adventures you and your companions are sure to have while in Phuket.
