As Thailand’s metropolitan capital and a major world capital, Bangkok is one of a kind and the type of place where you can truly find everything. The energetic city is incredibly family-friendly with lots of interesting events, attractions and destinations that will entertain all ages. Here are some of our favourite things to see, do and eat, with your kids.
Family-Friendly Bangkok – What To Do, Eat and See In The Big Mango
What to See
Museum Siam – This engaging museum covering the origins of Thai people and culture is fun for adults and children alike with its interactive multimedia exhibits. Don’t miss the room full of traditional toys, test out your battle skills in an active Ayutthaya-era game and much more.
The Golden Mount (Wat Saket) – Built during the reign of King Rama 1, Wat Saket is known for its small hill topped with a gleaming, 58-metre golden chedi (stupa). Though there are around 300 steps to the top, the plant-lined path is paved and not too steep as it snakes its way up the mound. The impressive panoramic views of the city below are well worth it
SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World – Formerly known as Siam Ocean World, SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World is located in the famous Siam Paragon shopping centre and is the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia. In fact, it’s much, much more than an aquarium with thousands of marine creatures, innovative exhibits, exciting activities – such as boat rides and walking along the ‘ocean’ floor in a dive suit – and Thailand’s first 4D theatre which offers a completely immersive experience.
What to Do
Play in the Park – There are many green spaces hidden in Bangkok’s concrete jungle. It’s the perfect place for kids to run around and let off some steam while getting a little break from the hustle and bustle of the big city. We recommend Lumpini, Benjakitti, Benjasiri or Chatuchak Park for a quick nature escape.
Cruise the Chao Phraya – The River of Kings has long been the lifeblood of Bangkok and still operates as an important way to get around the city with an active ferry system.
The public Chao Phraya Express Boats take passengers up and down the river as well as back and forth between the two banks for just THB 13-29. Try catching the ferry for a fun ride from Sathorn at the Thaksin Bridge (Central Pier).
Take a bike tour – See a different side of the city while also slipping in some exercise through an organised bike tour. There are several operators in town (ask the Concierge at Anantara Vacation Club at Sathorn Bangkok for recommendations) who will take you on a safe ride through small sois (streets) to discover how the big city is still made up of small neighbourhoods.
Where to Eat
Shopping Centre Food Courts– Bangkok’s massive shopping malls are known around the world for their killer deals, high fashion stores and exciting entertainment options (including cinemas, bowling alleys and ice skating rinks) but their impressive food courts are also worth writing home about, not to mention delicious.
Go to any of the shopping centres in the city and you’ll discover both sit-down restaurants (buffets are quite popular) and sprawling food courts catering to every taste and budget. You’re sure to find something to feed even the pickiest eater and everyone in the family can choose their own dish at different stalls then come to eat together. The quality at these food courts is also high while the prices stay low making them a fantastic dining option for families.
Café Tartine – Serving fresh sandwiches, soups and salads, Café Tartine is popular with Bangkok’s expat families for its delicious, healthy dishes as well as its stylish, yet kid-friendly, atmosphere. While adults enjoy a sophisticated meal, the kids will keep busy with their yummy selection off the children’s menu and a fun kid’s movie that’s always playing. The restaurant also has highchairs available for their young guests – something you don’t often find in Thailand.
Mr. Jones’ Orphanage – For a sweet treat, head to Mr. Jones’ Orphanage, a charmingly quirky café that has six locations at shopping malls around town decorated with teddy bears and toys. While there are breakfast items and sandwiches on the menu, the real reason to come here is the wide selection of cakes and desserts, from grown up indulgences to child-friendly crowd pleasers like chocolate cake covered in sweets.
You can also dine at Anantara Vacation Club at Sathorn Bangkok for an easy and delicious meal. With two on-site restaurants, 100° East serving Thai, Asian and international cuisine and Crust Pizza Bar offering a signature selection of wood-fired pizzas, you and your family have plenty of options right on your doorstep.
