A Foodie’s Guide To Seminyak, Bali’s Healthiest Eats

The Balinese town is routinely recognized as being the hub of high quality, health-conscious food in Southeast Asia. It’s filled to the brim with a selection of cafes and restaurants offering up options to those who are vegetarian, gluten-free, allergic to dairy, conscious of their sugar intake or just generally on the hunt for fresh, nutrient-dense meals free of the heavy oils often found in Balinese cuisine. Here are some of our favourite picks.

Shelter

Featuring a tranquil rooftop garden, Shelter offers a range of imaginative, health-conscious salads, sandwiches and comfort food. Start your day off with a fresh juice or smoothie, or opt for a dish from the all-day breakfast menu. Vegetarians will love the veggie burger and sweet potato chips, while those watching their insulin levels can opt for a raw energy ball for dessert. The restaurant regularly hosts live music nights, parties and weekend pop-up shops, and you can catch a glimpse of the nearby volcanos from the rooftop if you visit on a clear day!

Nalu Bowls

Being Bali’s original smoothie bowl shack, Nalu Bowls certainly knows how to make a fantastic one. Made from fresh, local ingredients, the smoothie bowls are offered in a variety of flavours – including dragon fruit, coconut, berry, mango, papaya and more. The homemade granola that Nalu Bowls uses is baked daily, and they provide a range of customizable smoothie toppings to choose from until you’re pleased with the final concoction. Add extra ingredients such as bee pollen, goji berries, chia seeds or coconut shreds to your bowl, or switch out soy milk for apple juice. The possibilities are endless!

Earth Café

Founded by renowned nutritionist Liat Soloman, Earth Café sells a range of organic vegetarian and vegan food that is non-GMO and MSG-free. Committed to using fresh, high-quality ingredients, some of the restaurant’s most popular options include eggplant and goat cheese burrekas, dragon bowls, tempeh sandwiches, chickpea burgers and coconut curries. From breakfast to dinner items, snacks, smoothies and more, Earth Café provides healthy options tailored to even the pickiest of eaters. Definitely do not skip out on paying it a visit (or three) while in Seminyak.

Sisterfields

Housed in a space straight out of the pages of a design magazine, you’ll have trouble deciding whether the food or the décor is more beautiful at Sisterfields. This is where Seminyak’s in-crowd comes to socialize and enjoy a variety of colourful, nutritious dishes. The extensive, all-day menu includes highlights such as blueberry and ricotta pancakes, poached squid salad, lamb neck ragu and, in true Bali style, an assortment of smoothies. Drop by at any time of day to indulge your culinary senses or see and be seen while sipping cocktails on Sisterfields’ gorgeous outdoor patio.

Sarong Restaurant

Recognized as being the most sought-after dining establishment in Bali, Sarong’s founding chef Will Meyrick developed the restaurant’s concept after establishing several other successful ones across Asia. Set in a gorgeous Balinese home, Sarong is only open in the evenings and requires advance reservations. While prices here will be higher than at the other venues we’ve suggested in Seminyak, the experience is worth the financial splurge. Sample the tuna tartare with ginger avocado, roasted duck salad and chicken grilled over coconut husk, or choose from the vegetarian and gluten-free menus. Sarong serves up distinctly unique Asian flavours while remaining heavily focused on using high-quality ingredients.

Zucchini Café

If you’re craving a salad while in Seminyak, you’ll be delighted to discover Zucchini Café . Serving every form of fruit and vegetable under the Indonesian sun, this is the place to stock up on your greens and vitamins before setting off on a day filled with adventure. Pair a high-protein salad with a smoothie or fresh juice and feel free to ask for extra toppings such as grilled eggplant, tofu or nuts to be added to your meal. Zucchini Café also provides a fantastic selection of healthy breakfasts, as well as some of the best coffee in Seminyak. The only challenge you’ll face is trying to decide what to order.
