Bangkok for kids! 4 hotspots for family-fun in the city

Bangkok for kids! 4 hotspots for family-fun in the city

1. Beat the tropical heat at Snow Town Bangkok

Need a break from the midday sun? Head to Snow Town, a Japanese-themed snow city on the fifth floor of the Gateway Ekamai mall and the biggest indoor snow park in Southeast Asia. This 3,000 square metre winter wonderland has slopes for sledding, a playground for building snowmen and having snowball fights and a village filled with shops, restaurants and kid-friendly places to play dress-up or get faces painted. The artificial snow is between 30 and 40 centimetres deep, but no need to worry if you’re not dressed for the occasion: Jackets are available for rent, and a day pass includes shoes.

2. Go wild with an animal adventure

Only in the urban jungle you can see Thailand’s most dangerous creatures up close. At the Snake Farm at Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, you’ll discover and enormous collection of indigenous Thai snakes, including the cobra, king cobra, banded krait, russell viper, pit viper and sea snake, along with a walk-in garden of snake habitats.  Inside the museum, multimedia exhibits teach you all about the life cycle of these slithering serpents, their anatomy, toxicology, mythology and first-aid for snakebite victims. But the Farm isn’t just a tourist attraction: It was founded by the Red Cross Society to study poisonous snakes and develop anti-venom to treat snakebite victims, and the highlight of a visit is the chance to witness a live venom extraction, which takes place every day at 11:00 am. Held in the arena—and safely behind glass!—your host will explain the process in both English and Thai while experts extract venom from poisonous snakes. A snake handling show follows at 2.30 pm. It’s a fascinating experience for kids and adults alike!

3. See a traditional Thai puppet show at Aksra Theatre

Aksra Theatre’s traditional Thai puppet shows are one of Bangkok’s must-see attractions! Each show uses elaborate, colourful puppets to tell classic folk tales. Three puppeteers work together to control a single puppet—one each for the legs, arms and head—and unlike many puppet shows where the puppeteers are hidden behind a wall or curtain, the puppeteers are very much part of the performance! Puppeteers dress in black to blend into the background, but they dance alongside their puppets to the music of a live orchestra, which uses both Thai and European instruments.

4. Bounce around at Bangkok Bobble Football

Burn off some steam and have a laugh at Bangkok Bobble Football! Your kids will be bouncing off the walls—and the grass and each other—while safely encased in enormous inflatable bubbles. A trained facilitator leads races and games and keeps your crew safe. Get a group of family and friends together for a fun-filled bonding activity, or join an open game. Both adult-sized and kid-sized bobbles are available.
